This year, Men’s Retreats has finally figured out what all the buzz is about when it comes to all things ‘County’. Prince Edward County is bursting at the seams with incredible, innovative, creative entrepreneurs making the trip to such a stunning local area that much more pleasurable. This burgeoning community is home to some of our favourite county indulgences…

The Ferg is quickly becoming our preferred home base on our County adventures. The lovely Anna Hardwick’s B&B in Picton is perfectly appointed and definitely delivers on the County vibe we crave.

And if you haven’t yet been for pizza at Norman Hardie Winery, what are you waiting for? Dining alfresco among the vines that grow their fine wines is a County highlight your taste buds won’t soon forget.

We visited the dunes at Sandbanks Provincial Park a few weeks ago for one of our beloved’s milestone birthday celebration and were completely blown away by their majesty. Our afternoon there was so dreamy and perfectly beachy as we swam, hiked through the rolling dunes and napped in the shade of the poplars. The Sandbanks are the world’s largest baymouth barrier dune formation and they are spectacular. The pristine white sand beaches stretch for miles along Lake Ontario with plenty of hiking trails and gorgeous places to swim. We’re so excited to take you guys out to the dunes so you can experience the magic for yourself.

Accommodation for The County Retreat are in 7 charming self contained lakeside cottages, situated on the shore of Lake on the Mountain, 200 feet above the Bay of Quinte at Lake on the Mountain Resort. And in ‘The House Across the Road’ built in 1892 on the crest of the bluff overlooking Adolphus beach. LOTM is steeped in history and the mystery of the lake has played a prominent role in the history of the land. LOTM has no visible water source. The lake’s outlet stream flows north through a shallow bedrock channel over the Prince Edward escarpment to the Bay of Quinte below. The Mowawks called it Onokenoga, or Lake of the Gods, and believed that spirits dwelled within its deep waters. We fell in love with LOTM while scouting the resort last spring, and are especially excited about the beautiful boathouse situated out over the lake that will serve as our practice space for the retreat.

Attention all craft brew enthusiasts, did we mention the resort has its own brewery? We’re so lucky to get to sample many popular and seasonal styles brewed on site using fresh local ingredients including hops grown on site and locally grown barley. Some of what we can expect to see in the restaurants catering our retreat (‘The Miller House’ and ‘The Inn’) this season are: Cream Ale, Pacific Gem IPA, Indian Point Pale Ale, Long Point Lager, Adolphus Summer Ale. Thirsty yet?

Located in the southern state of Santa Catarina, Praia do Rosa is considered one of the most cosmopolitan and sophisticated, yet fairly untapped beach town. Made from an eco-conscious community of fishermen, surfers, artists, entrepreneurs and expats from neighbouring countries such as Argentina and Uruguay; the town sits high on a bluff above the beach offering beautiful views wherever you look. In winter and spring, the bay becomes a breeding ground for southern right whales, and mothers and calves can be seen from the beach. In spite of its lack of infrastructure, the town offers some of the best cuisine in the region showcasing a variety of flavours using only local ingredients.o human connection and the nature that surrounds us.

Pousada Casa do Ceo is a little piece of heaven hidden in the Atlantic rainforest. This boutique bed & breakfast blends the architecture of Santa Catarina with the typical decoration, food and hospitality from Minas Gerais. The location allows you to leave the car behind and get lost in nature and in the irresistible charm of this undiscovered beach town. All suites are spacious and super comfortable, around the pool with waterfall and deck with panoramic views to the valley, lagoon and the beautiful dunes of Siriú. The beach and the main street in town are within a 10 minute walk through a tree-covered trail. This is one of those places that once experienced, you will never want to leave.

Brazil is a safe emerging country to visit as an international traveller. Its southern states are often compared to Europe due to its strong economy and low violence rates. When booking your flights, you will have the option to land in Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo; giving you the opportunity to extend your trip and visit one of those cities after a week of relaxation in our retreat. Once in Brazil, you will hop on a short flight to the beautiful island Florianópolis, located an hour away from Praia do Rosa by car. The Portuguese first landed on the island in 1514, bringing along their cuisine, architecture and lifestyle; all of which remains to this date. With more than 42 pristine beaches, Floripa or the ‘magic island’ (as the locals call it) is a top destination for travellers from the Americas, Europe and Asia. Whether you want to explore, shop, dine, party or rest on some of the most beautiful beaches on earth, the island has it all.

Who doesn’t love a good desert? Those of you who came to 6 Mile Lake know that Blake Mackay creates some of the best treats we’ve ever tasted. We’re happy to share with you his recipe for a Vegan Chocolate Mousse. Enjoy responsibly!

  • 2 tablespoons of maple syrup or honey
  • ½ cup water
  • 8 oz of chopped dark chocolate
  • 1x 12oz box of soft silken tofu
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Heat the water, honey and chocolate together in a small pan over low heat until the chocolate melts. Stir occasionally for the approximately 5-7 minutes time that it takes.

Pour the melted chocolate into the jug of a blender, add the tofu and run until you have a smooth textured purée. Divide the purée among individual bowls or one large one and refrigerate at least 4 hours to let it set up.

You can add cinnamon, or ginger or use chai tea instead of water or flavour with orange or whatever you want really.

Let’s be real guys, we know there’s nothing better than having healthy snacks on hand at all times. This month we’re sharing one of our favourite snacks created by our friend Chef and Food Stylist Blake Mackay. Some of you had the chance to taste these on our 6 Mile Lake Retreat and asked for the recipe, so here it is. Enjoy and share the love guys.

  • 500g pitted dates, chopped
  • 2 cups almonds
  • ½ cup hemp seeds
  • ½ cup sesame seeds
  • 1 cup tahini
  • 3 tablespoons candied ginger, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons fennel seeds
  • 2 tablespoons coriander seeds
  • Zest of 1 lemon
  • Zest of 1 orange

In the bowl of a food processor coarsely grind the almonds along with the fennel seeds, coriander seeds, ginger and zests. Once you have obtained something that looks like really coarse sand pour it into a bowl add the hemp and sesame seeds and put it aside.

Next the dates and tahini get together in the food processor until the obtention of a smooth and creamy dreamy texture.

Add the nut and seeds combo into the mix and pulse until it looks like a shaggy paste.

Form into balls and roll in nuts/seeds/grains/spices/coconut if you desire to do so, otherwise refrigerate your round friends and eat them as you will.

We feel a movement happening. Within ourselves, within each other.  Men all over the world are awakening to a feeling of stepping into a more conscious brotherhood.  As we do so, there is a need for support and connection with one another. There is much to be gained by creating a meeting ground for us to join together to support this shift in community.  To help one another uncover and commit to various techniques and tools that foster conscious living. We all have unique histories that have led us toward the discovery of a common calling (goal): to live a meaningful, engaging, and purposeful life. In hearing this call we recognize that though we walk our individuals paths,  we have more in common than different and that in sharing the journey we discover the richness of life.  Men’s Retreats is an answer to that call:  To create a meeting ground for us all to show up to with our unique gifts and practices, techniques and tools that help us uncover, honour and align us to the wisdom of our hearts.  To give ourselves and each other both space and time to tap into the insight required to nourish moving forward in life with awakened integrity. (We aim to hold ourselves accountable as awakened, loving men.)

We believe we are all unique and that in sharing our truth in community we discover the freedom of expressing our whole selves both strong and vulnerable. We believe in supporting the expression of truth and stepping outside of our comfort zones to experience ourselves without judgement or limiting beliefs of how we can or have been allowed to be as men. We celebrate diversity and inclusivity and invite all individuals who identify as men to explore the various expressions of brotherhood and give ourselves and each other permission to shed the belief that to be a man means to exist in one way.

Inhabiting our bodies and accepting our minds with kind and tender observation, to give rise to what feels stuck, hurt, confused, and disconnected – and to hold that part of ourselves with kindness and compassion. We believe in clear communication and deep listening. Through our practice on retreat, we hold space for the kind of deep listening that reconnects us with our innate wisdom to know and feel what is asking for more attention and understanding while cultivating the discernment to know what to let go of.

Nature is medicine and that the more we can give ourselves back to nature, the more we will grow. We believe in the need for re-integration with our natural environment. To shift our landscape of connection away from one ruled by technology and devices toward one that honours the need to return to human connection and the nature that surrounds us.

We believe that through aligning our minds and our bodies, we connect more fully to our true selves.  We trust that the vibrancy of life is found in the space between action and stillness that awakens a deepening sense of honour for the present moment. We live for community, support, adventure, and play.

Being on retreat is a way to wake up the intuition, a way to tune into the divine intelligence present in every moment.  A time, the place, and a safe space to systematically reconnect to the body through movement,  breath awareness, self massage, and spending time bearing witness to the mind,  to open more freely to seeing the roots  of our complexities without the confines of conditioned fear and limiting judgement.
